Introduction and Scope of PPE Certification

PPE (personal protective equipment) is the abbreviation for the Personal Protection Regulation, which refers to any device or appliance worn or held by an individual to protect against one or more hazards to health and safety.The purpose of the PPE Regulation is to ensure that all Member States work together to develop common standards for personal protective equipment (PPE) in terms of protection of health and safety of users, and to enable the free movement of PPE within the Union. and safety, whilst enabling the free movement of PPE within the Union.

On 31 March 2016, the EU published the latest regulation 2016/425 on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in its Official Journal and on 21 April 2016 it came into force. This regulation will replace the existing Directive 89/686/EEC for a transitional period of 2 years from 21 April 2018 onwards. EC certificates under the old Directive 89/686/EEC that have not expired by 21 April 2023 will remain valid.

Scope of application of PPE certification.

1. Head protection products: such as occupational helmets, industrial helmets, sports helmets, work hats, dust caps, waterproof hats, cold hats, helmets, anti-static hats, anti-temperature hats, anti-electromagnetic radiation hats, anti-insect hats, crash hats and so on.

2. Eye protection products: such as sunglasses, filter glasses, welding goggles and masks, furnace goggles and masks, anti-impact eye protection, etc.

3. Hand protection products: general protective gloves, waterproof gloves, cold gloves, anti-virus gloves, anti-static gloves, anti-temperature gloves, anti-X-ray gloves, anti-acid and alkali gloves, anti-oil gloves, anti-vibration gloves, anti-cutting gloves, insulated gloves and so on.

4. Respiratory protection products: dust masks and anti-virus masks, according to the form can be divided into filtering and isolation of the two types.

The first category of "simple design":

The second category is "neither simple nor complex design":

The third category is "Complex Designs":

This category of complex design is used to protect against fatal injuries, or to prevent serious or irreversible damage to health, or momentary dangers that the designer believes are too late for the user to realise.

This category of PPE includes:

--filtering respiratory devices for protection against solid or gaseous floating dust masses, or irritating, hazardous, toxic or radioactive gases;
--respiratory protection devices for complete insulation from the atmosphere, including respiratory protection for use in diving;
--PPE that provides some protection only against chemical corrosion or ionising radiation;
--PPE for use in high-temperature environments, which may be used in environments with atmospheric temperatures of 100°C or more, with or --without infra-red rays, flames or the characteristic of ejecting large quantities of molten material;
--PPE for use in environments equivalent to minus 50°C;
--PPE for protection against falling from height.
